About Alan Barnard
I started in corporate training in the UK, Africa and the Persian Gulf before relocating to Texas, where I've spent the past two decades designing learning experiences for companies ranging from global enterprises to fast-growing small teams. That blend of perspectives — British grounding, international experience — shapes how I approach every project: practical, clear, and built for the audience in front of me, whether that's ten people or ten thousand.

Today I work as an independent instructional designer and eLearning developer, building courses in Articulate Storyline 360 and Rise 360, alongside video production in Camtasia and Premiere Pro. I've delivered work for companies including IBM, Dell Technologies, ExxonMobil, NATO, and ALS Global, spanning compliance training, technical onboarding, and sensitive topics like AI awareness, where tone matters as much as content. I bring the same rigour to a five-person startup's first onboarding module as I do to a multinational's global rollout — the scale changes, the standard doesn't. I increasingly bring AI tools like ElevenLabs and Runway into my production pipeline, without ever losing sight of sound instructional design grounded in ADDIE, Kirkpatrick, and adult learning principles.

I work remotely on contract and project-based engagements, and I'm equally comfortable slotting into an existing brand and style guide or building a course identity from scratch — which often matters more to a smaller business that doesn't have one yet. If you need someone who can take a project from a rough brief to a finished, polished course, and explain clearly why each design decision was made, that's where I add the most value, regardless of your company's size.

HOW I WORK
My process
A straightforward five-step approach, refined over 25 years of enterprise projects.
01
Discover
I start by understanding your business — the audience, the goals, and what success looks like — before any design work begins.
02
Design
I map out objectives, content flow, and the right mix of instruction and assessment. You'll see a storyboard before development starts.
01
Develop
The course comes to life using the right authoring tool for the job — built with custom interactions, graphics, audio, and video.
01
Deliver
Packages ready for your LMS, plus source files so your team retains full ownership.
01
Evaluate
I build in ways to measure whether the course worked — from knowledge checks to Kirkpatrick-based evaluation — and refine from there.
Every project is grounded in proven frameworks — including ADDIE, Bloom's Taxonomy, and Kirkpatrick's evaluation model — applied where they add value, not as box-ticking exercises.
